	You’ve all seen on TV, or read about, K-9 dogs assisting police<br>
	in arresting criminals.  We got a chance to meet two <br>
	ex-Chico K-9 police officers who have one of the top K-9 dog<br>
	training facilities located in Chico called Ridgeside K9 NorCal.
	<br><br> 
	Brett Smith born and raised in Reno, moved to Chico in 1990<br>
	where he was hired as a police office for the Chico Police<br>
	Department. Brett was the first K-9 officer on the Chico<br> 
	Police Department beginning in 1996.
	<br><br> 
	Rich Hartman is one of the trainers.  He was born and raised<br> 
	in Chico and is a 25-year veteran of law enforcement.  For 15<br>
	years Rich was a full-time K-9 handler.

	They explained how they train dogs, the best breeds to train, where<br>
	the dogs come from and the different agencies that use them. 
	<br><br> 
	They had a current Chico Police officer and his dog at our meeting.<br>  
	They had the newest trained dog that just spent quite<br>
	a bit of time in an East Coast tracking training.
	<br><br> 
	Additional Thought: There is national talk about starting to train<br>
	dogs to help stop shoplifting and theft, and also to be on school<br>
	grounds for added safety.  K-9 training may be in big demands<br>
	and we learned how the training is done.
