You’ve all seen on TV, or read about, K-9 dogs assisting police
in arresting criminals. We got a chance to meet two
ex-Chico K-9 police officers who have one of the top K-9 dog
training facilities located in Chico called Ridgeside K9 NorCal.
Brett Smith born and raised in Reno, moved to Chico in 1990
where he was hired as a police office for the Chico Police
Department. Brett was the first K-9 officer on the Chico
Police Department beginning in 1996.
Rich Hartman is one of the trainers. He was born and raised
in Chico and is a 25-year veteran of law enforcement. For 15
years Rich was a full-time K-9 handler.
They explained how they train dogs, the best breeds to train, where
the dogs come from and the different agencies that use them.
They had a current Chico Police officer and his dog at our meeting.
They had the newest trained dog that just spent quite
a bit of time in an East Coast tracking training.
Additional Thought: There is national talk about starting to train
dogs to help stop shoplifting and theft, and also to be on school
grounds for added safety. K-9 training may be in big demands
and we learned how the training is done.
